Sherlock Holmes will be returning for a third film, pegged for a release in late 2020.

The film has been floated for years, but now we can finally lock it in.

Both Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will reprise their roles as Holmes and Dr Watson for the third film, to come out on Christmas Day in 2020.

Neither Downey or Law has been able to commit due to conflicting schedules, with Downey most notably starring as Iron Man throughout all the Marvel flicks.

There's no news on whether Guy Ritchie will return to direct the film like he did for the first two, with Narcos creator Chris Brancato reportedly writing the script.

It's unlikely Jared Harris will return to reprise his role as Professor Moriarty, though.

"I think the last iteration when they last wrote a screenplay for Sherlock Holmes 3, Moriarty wasn't in it. So, I'm not focusing on it," he told Digital Spy.
