Star Wars Super Fans Will Froth On New Memorabilia Based On Collectors' "Grail Among Grails"

Star Wars super-fans get excited: Columbia Sportswear are about to drop a jacket that looks almost exactly like the original, dubbed the "grail among grails" for collectors.

The winter coat is modelled on the specially designed versions worn by the crew on the Hoth set of Empire Strikes Back in 1979 and is pretty much like-for-like, right down to the patches.

Less than 1000 of the original coats were manufactured, making them extremely rare; one sold at auction last year for about AUD$10,000 and because they weren't technically movie memorabilia, they weren't exactly looked after.

"The crew for Empire filmed during heavy blizzard conditions," a post on StarWars.com from February last year reads.

"To prepare all the crew members for the harsh filming conditions, each person was issued a custom snowsuit which consisted of a blue parka with hood, matching pants, boots, two sets of socks, long underwear, mittens, a thin balaclava, a knitted balaclava/ cap and ski goggles.

"The entire outfit is colour co-ordinated in matching blue."

And while Columbia's updated version uses slightly more modern tech, the company has kept many of the same design features.

"What makes collectors' hearts beat faster are meticulously recreated details like the bold blue design shoulder stripes for heightened visibility, the Darth Vader chest patch, Star Wars logos and a removable and customisable name plate on the chest pocket," Columbia says.

There's also a nod to the original place of filming in Norway with the coordinates of the Hardangerjøkulen Glacier embroidered in the lining of the jacket.

It's basically a Star Wars fan's dream Christmas present - even if it doesn't exactly get cold enough to warrant wearing it here in Australia.
