The best basketball movie of all time - don't @ us - is officially getting a sequel with LeBron James stepping into predecessor Michael's Air Jordans.

James announced the news via his production company SpringHill Entertainment, who uploaded a graphic of a locker room confirming the Lakers' small forward will be taking a starring role in Space Jam 2 alongside returning cast member Bugs Bunny.

Ryan Coogler, who directed Black Panther, will produce the sequel while Terence Nance has come on-board as director.

"The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie," James told The Hollywood Reporter.

"It's so much bigger. I'd just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they just don't give up on their dreams.

"And I think Ryan [Coogler] did that for a lot of people."

While no other basketball stars have been linked to the project just yet, filming won't start until the 2019 NBA off-season - which means legends like Steph Curry and James Harden are, theoretically, free to take part.

The sequel comes 22 years after the original, which saw Michael Jordan kidnapped by the Looney Tunes in an effort to defeat a team of space monsters where it really matters - the basketball court.
