Its been four years since the last stand alone Thor film from the Marvel Universe, and Thor: Ragnarok was well worth the wait.

Armed with a very, very strong cast, the third instalment in the Thor franchise is not only the best film of the series, it might just be the best Marvel film so far.

Of all the standalone Marvel Avengers films that have come before it (Iron Man, Captain America, Avengers), you get the feeling that Marvel Studios view the Thor as their loosest franchise, and something they can have a lot of fun with.

And that is exactly what they've done with Thor: Ragnarok.

For all the action sequences and space battles, it's the comedy value that really stands out.

The reins for Ragnarok were handed to (bloody brilliant) New Zealand director Taika Waititi, known for his cult Kiwi comedies What We Do In The Shadows, Hunt For The Wilder People and Boy - and as funny as those films were, Ragnarok is his best work.

The storyline of the film is once again based around Thor (Chris Hemsworth) trying to protect his home world of Asgard from complete annihilation.

Unfortunately for Thor, while on a visit back to earth with his adopted brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), he runs into some trouble in the form of Hela, the Goddess of Death, who is brilliantly played by Cate Blanchett.

On his way back home, Thor finds himself in some trouble and ends up in a foreign world, trying to find his way home to once again save Asgard, where he bumps into an old Avenger mate, The Hulk.

We won't give away any more of the plot line; all we will say is keep an eye out for some A-list cameos.

Despite boasting a giant cast of Hollywood heavyweights, including Hemsworth, Hiddleston, Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo, Idris Alba, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban and Sir Anthony Hopkins, there is not one actor that stands above the rest, with everyone, including director Waititi who plays a boulder-like gladiator with a Islander accent, puts in an A+ performance that compliments the rest of the cast.

Thor: Ragnarok is a movie that has something for everyone - action, comedy, suspense, and absolute killer soundtrack (that includes a Led Zeppelin classic).

As mentioned earlier, it's not only the best film in the Thor franchise; it's the best superhero film Marvel has produced.

Five stars.
