Britain's Hollywood hardman Tom Hardy is set to star as Al Capone in an upcoming biopic on the notorious Chicago gangster.

Hardy, famous for his role as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, as well as star turns in Inception, Dunkirk, The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road, has reportedly signed on to star as Capone in Fonzo, with filming set to begin next month.

The film will focus on the later years of arguably one of the world's most famous mobsters.

The film's synopsis reads: "Once a ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Alfonse Capone was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore. At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Alfonse's mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life."

Josh Trank (Chronicle, Fantastic Four) has signed on to direct the film.
