Remember when severed feet - still in their shoes - were washing up off the coast of Canada? Well this is like that but even worse.

Russian police have shared horrific images of a discovery made by a local at a popular fishing spot near the city of Khabarovsk.

According to The Siberian Times, dozens of pairs of severed hands were found in a bag on a snowy island in the Amur River, in the Far East of Siberia near China.

In total, the bag contained 53 hands, with another discovered nearby.

While police are investigating, there remains "mystery over who the sinister hands belonged to, when they were chopped off and why."

And for anyone who has watched as much CSI: Miami as we have, you'll be intrigued to know fingerprints have been retrieved from one of the hands so far.

Theories as to the gruesome find so far include:

1. The hands have been chopped off as a punishment for stealing;

2. The hands have been severed from dead bodies in a hospital;

3. The hands were removed from corpses used for stealing body parts in order to prevent authorities from identifying any victims afterwards.

Police have refused to comment on the case, but one local has stated the obvious by saying: "It is a sickening sight".
