The fourth annual Melbourne International Spirits Competition has just been held and a $35 bottle of hooch from Aldi has taken out the prestigious Double Gold.

The Highland Black Eight-Year-Old Scotch Whiskey swept its more expensive competition aside to be one of three whiskies awarded the Double Gold prize.

All entrants in the competition are blind-judged by a selection panel according to product and pricing category.

Adam Levy, the competition founder and judge, described the whisky as “phenomenal for its price“.

“To get the double gold award, it means the spirit is in the top 10% of the whole competition.”

The Double Gold win is just another gong for Aldi’s cheap booze after an $8 bottle of rosé took out an international prize last month, along with a $6 bottle of red from Coles.
