A bloke in Mount Isa has blown up his own kitchen using a home-made flamethrower in an effort to kill cockroaches.

Emergency services were called to his home around 8pm Wednesday and took him to Mount Isa Hospital.

He suffered lacerations to his head and hand from shrapnel from the explosion.

Other people in the house weren’t injured.

Station officer Ian Louden told the ABC that they believed the man accidentally ignited a can and a half of bug spray while trying to burn the roaches, which destroyed windows and cause huge damage to the kitchen and walls.

He said that people shouldn’t be blasé about the warning labels on insect spray warning against exposing them to naked flame.

"The instructions are put on these things for a purpose and if failure to follow them can result in as it did in this case extreme damage to the property," he said.

"The people are very lucky that there wasn't serious injury or death."
