A bloke named Shane “Shag” Hanrahan was crowned the ultimate winner of Best Mullet at tha inaugural Mulletfest in the Hunter Valley yesterday.
Winners were announced in five categories — Everyday, Grubby, Junior, Ladies and Ranga — at the Chelmsford Hotel in Kurri Kurri, before Shag was announced as the overall winner.
He had already taken out the Everyday category.
He celebrated by smashing some bourbon — Jim Beam of course — from the cup he got as a trophy, and belting out a cover of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap by AC/DC with the band The Stunned Mullets.
Shag — whose wife is a hairdresser(!) — hasn’t had a haircut since 1986.
The youngest winner was 11-month-old Sylvie Thomas, who took out the award for Ladies Mullet.
Mulletfest managed to make news as far away as London:
The idea for Mulletfest came about sitting around the Table of Knowledge in the front bar at the Chelmsford, with publican Laura Johnson and friend Sarah Bedford conceiving it.
Entrants came from as far away as Victoria and New Zealand.
