Australian's annual alcohol consumption has increased for the first time since 2007.

New figures released from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed pure alcohol consumption increased to 9.7 litres per person over the last financial year - with the blame for the increase attributed to the rise in popularity of craft beer.

While the increase from the previous financial year was only 180ml, industry analyst Nathan Cloutman told Newscorp the two per cent growth in alcohol consumption could mainly be attributed to the rising popularity of craft beer, particularly among young and middle age consumers who were looking for “more quality rather than quantity”.

Overall, compared with the financial years of 2015 to 2016, beer consumption was up (+3%), wine consumption was down (-0.5%), and cider consumption was up (+16%).
