Eight Argentina police have seen their careers go up in smoke after stealing half a ton of marijuana from an evidence room and claiming instead that mice had eaten it.

After a routine inspection of a police warehouse for impounded drugs in the town of Pilar, 60km outside the capital city of Buenos Aires, authorities noticed the missing ganja and started asking questions.

The 6,000kg stash of hash had been in police lock up for two years, but only 5460kg were accounted for during the inspection.

Suspicion has fallen on the city’s former police commissioner Javier Specia, who had left his post in April 2017, and was replaced by commissioner Emilio Portero who noticed the shortfall in the weed stocks.

Called before the courts, Specia and three of his former officers all offered the same explanation: the missing weed had had been “eaten by mice”.

However forensic experts told the court that even a substantial number of rodents couldn't have eaten that much marijuana.

“Buenos Aires University experts have explained that mice wouldn’t mistake the drug for food, and that if a large group of mice had eaten it, a lot of corpses would have been found in the warehouse,” said a spokesperson for the judge.

Hmmm... sounds like old mate Specia had some retirement party...
