In news that will do absolutely nothing to improve our reputation for having a country full of ridiculous animals, an Australian family has been woken up by a kangaroo crashing through their front window.

Mafi Ahokavo, who lives in Melbourne with his wife and three-year-old son, was asleep when he heard glass smashing and got up to investigate.

And, lo and behold, there was a kangaroo in his home - no doubt made all the more shocking considering that it was the first time  Ahokavo had even seen a kangaroo.

In a panic, the roo then took off through the house, breaking a second window, scratching a car and causing damage to a number of walls before a quick-thinking Ahokavo locked it in the bathroom.

Wildlife Victoria's Manfred Zabinskas, who was called out to rescue the animal, said the incident wasn't actually that uncommon.

"Basically, we've created a situation [where] we've taken over their homes and they've got caught up in urban sprawl," he said.

"We're shifting into the few areas left where our kangaroos are living."

The roo, having sustained lacerations to its body during the incident, is currently recovering at a Wildlife Victoria shelter.
