Benedict Cumberbatch has become a real-life hero, saving a cyclist from a gang attack in London.

Cumberbatch, who was in an Uber with his wife, leapt out of the vehicle when he saw a Deliveroo rider being attack by a group of four, according to The Sun.

He and the driver, who joined in, both had to defend themselves, before the men ran off.

He said there was a sense of obligation.

“I did it out of, well, I had to, you know?” he said.

His Uber driver, Manual Dias, said he didn't know it was Benedict Cumberbatch at first.

“It was only then I recognised Benedict. Then it all got a bit surreal. Here was Sherlock Holmes fighting off four attackers just around the corner from Baker Street," he told The Sun.

"He seemed to know exactly what he was doing. He was very brave.

"They tried to hit him but he defended himself and pushed them away. He wasn’t injured. Then I think they also recognised it was Benedict and ran away.

"If he hadn’t stepped in the cyclist could have been seriously injured. He asked the rider how he was and when he said, ‘I’m OK’ Benedict just hugged him."
