Next time you're lusting after a luxury sports car, take a moment to remember this cautionary tale.

A bloke in the US has completely written off his brand new McLaren 720S supercar exactly one day after being handed the keys to the spendy vehicle.

Fairfax County PD shared a snap of the AUD$500,000 car wrapped around a tree in Virginia alongside a warning for other drivers.

"Purchased Friday. Totalled Saturday," they wrote. "This McLaren 720S, costing around $300,000, was destroyed in Great Falls because of speed."

While the driver was taken to hospital for treatment, his injuries were, thankfully, non-life threatening.

"A reminder to slow down, or it could cost you," Fairfax County PD added.

According to the Australian Financial Review, the 720S can hit 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 341 km/h.
