A bold attempt to break the land speed record has gone horribly wrong for British motoring journo David Tremayne.

He came agonisingly close to breaking the 485km/h mark when his jet-powered dragster spun out of control.

The record attempt was being made on an airfield near York on the weekend.

Tremayne admits he might've got too cocky for his own good.

“I always believed the car would never hurt me. I am quite stoical about it," he said.

"As I put the parachute out suddenly the car went sideways, it was on its side and rolled over at around 250mph, I jumped out and it carried on down the track," the 64-year-old told local rag The Northern Echo.

So just how fast did he go before it all went horribly wrong?

447.9km/h... before the dragster lost speed and flipped.

Tremayne might do well to have share a lager with The Grand Tour (and former Top Gear) host Richard Hammond, who's no stranger to high speed mishaps.

His own attempt to set a new land speed record also ended in similar crash at 480km/h in 2006.

Check out the crash David will be telling his grandkids about for years to come below.
