NASA has released a photograph taken 6.1 billion kilometres away from Earth.

The record-breaking photo - the furthest image from earth ever taken - was captured by the New Horizons spacecraft when it flew past Pluto in July 2015.

The image, which to the naked eye just looks like an eery green glow in between some cloud looking things, is actually something much cooler.

Using Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) technology, New Horizons was able to photograph several objects in the Kuiper Belt, as well as some dwarf planets.

"New Horizons has long been a mission of firsts," the mission's principle investigator Alan Stern said, "First to explore Pluto, first to explore the Kuiper Belt, fastest spacecraft ever launched.

"And now, we've been able to make images farther from Earth than any spacecraft in history."

Pretty cool, huh?
