The first direct commercial flight from Perth to London was completed over the weekend.

QF9 - a Qantas Dreamliner - arrived in London at 5:02 AM local time on Sunday morning after taking off 17 hours earlier from Perth International Airport.

The third longest commercial route in the world, the flight was the first the time any commercial airline has flown direct from Australia to anywhere in Europe.

The direct flight is the newest adaptation of Qantas' famous 'Kangaroo Route', which initially took 12 and a half days to complete, including ten refuelling stops and rail links.

Qantas' CEO Alan Joyce said the airline's next step was to introduce direct European flights from Australia's eastern cities.
