A bloke in Queensland has gotten so sick of waiting for the NBN that he’s gone and built his own broadband network.

Luke Baker of Bundaberg got together with some mates and created their own network named Open Cloud Broadband, which they say can offer speeds double that of the NBN.

The idea came about because Baker was struggling to get his work done from home with the connection he had.

"I was running a communications business from home. The internet was so bad, it was hard to send an email," he told Weekend Sunrise.

'I wanted to get hold of someone to solve it. When I investigated it, it did not look like anyone was going solve it. The only way to make it happen it was to do it ourselves."

Baker was lucky enough to have good high quality communications connections who helped him set himself up.

He says they may try and expand beyond Bundaberg, but that it’s a big ask.

"We have got a growth plan and we can get up to 200 megabits per second download which is double what the NBN is offering," he said.

"It is a bit easier for us because we are just here in Bundaberg. We picked this area because we live here.

"The NBN Co is trying to replace a telephony network which took 100 years to build, so it's a big job."
