Um... Fake news?

For the second time in three months, Russian media has mistakenly used video game clips for actual, real-life footage of military action.

Viewers of state-run Channel One TV's weekly Voskresnoye Vremya programme spotted the most recent anomaly during a tribute to war veterans on Sunday night.

A segment honouring Roman Filippov, a pilot of a Su-25 ground attack aircraft who was killed in action in Syria earlier this month, appeared to show Su-25 "Frogfoot" jets in action.

But eagle-eyed onlookers spotted that gun-sight footage of a truck being attack wasn't, uh, real and was in fact a clip from Arma-3.

The stuff-up was quickly posted to Pikabu - the Russian version of Reddit - sparking debate about whether it had been done deliberately.

But a spokesperson from Channel One has since been quoted as saying that the move was an accident, explaining that "the use of this frame was a mistake by the video editing director, who took it from the archive."

It follows a similar incident in November 2017, when the Russian Defence Ministry released photos of what they insisted was "irrefutable proof" that the US was helping ISIS.

It didn't take long for online users to point out that the images in question were actually stills from AC-130 Gunship Simulator: Special Ops Squadron.
