A big discount on Nutella in France has led to riots as shoppers tried to get as much of the spread as they could.

Supermarket Intermarché offered a 70% discount on Nutella, with the price coming down from €4.50 (AU$6.90) to €1.40 (AU$2.15).

The huge discount led to supermarket customers fighting as they scrambled for as much Nutella as they could buy.

"They are like animals,” one customer told French media.

“A woman had her hair pulled, an elderly lady took a box on her head, another had a bloody hand.”

One Intermarché outlet reported having all of their stock sold out in 15 minutes and a customer copping a black eye.

A supermarket in Toulouse had to restrict sale of Nutella to one jar per customer.
