Not that we need to twist your arm around this time of year to enjoy a sociable (and responsible) drink with your mates, but a new study suggests it could be good for your mental health.

A study by psychologists at Oxford University in the UK has suggested that sharing a pint with your mates at the pub twice a week does wonders for a bloke's mental health.

We're not suggesting that that's a free pass to get hammered, but the effects of socialising and physically chatting to your mates mad men less anxious, released endorphins, and made men less likely to get ill.

The couple of pints also, strangely enough, made blokes more generous overall.

"Bonds can be formed through a range of activities from team sports to male banter - or simply having a pint with your pals on a Friday night," Robin Dunbar, the director of the Social and Evolutionary Neuroscience Group at Oxford said.

"However, the key to maintaining strong friendships is to meet up twice a week and do stuff with the four people closest to you."

The study also sadly found that one in three blokes simply couldn't find the time to catch up with their mates once a week.

So there you have it, scientific proof that you should message your mates and organise a catchup this week before Christmas activities get too heavy.
