The humble magpie, the bird that spend nine months of the year parading around humbly before decennia into madness for the months of Spring, swooping anyone within eyeshot, has taken out the Australian Bird of the Year award for 2017.
The competition, held by Birdlife Australia in conjunction with Guardian Australia, wanted to democratically elect Australia's favourite bird, and despite a large groundswell of support and a very public push for the White Ibis aka the 'Bin Chicken', the Australian Magpie received a whopping 19,083 votes to be crowned Australia's favourite fowl - beating out the White Ibis by 843 votes.
Surprisingly, besides clearly being the best looking and sounding bird in our Great Southern Land, the Laughing Kookaburra could only manage 10,953 votes to finish in third place.
The Tawny Frogmouth (the weird owl looking things) and Superb Fairy-wren (big name for a bird the didn't take out top place) rounded out the top five.
So remember next Spring when you're being repeatedly swooped by a maggie, you voted for this Australia, we're in their country now.
