Security bollards designed to protect Parliament House from terrorist attacks have instead being destroying cars used to drive politicians around Canberra, according to Fairfax Media.

The heavy bollards have motors that make them capable of throwing trucks around when they spring up, but have accidentally destroyed five Commonwealth cars in the last three months.

Cars have had transmissions and motors smashed.

The issues apparently began when anti-terrorism work was undertaken at Parliament House, which interfered with the bollards ability to operate automatically.

Instead, they had to be run manually, which is apparently what has caused the issues.

The cars were so damaged that most of them were written, although no people had been injured.
