The Simpsons

Whatever your thoughts on The Simpsons - and we're sure you have many - it seems like nothing's going to stop this particular TV train.

The long-running show has smashed record after record but someone, somewhere, has done some maths and figured out that this weekend's upcoming episode is about to topple the biggest one of all.

The 636th instalment, which will air in the US on Sunday, marks The Simpsons as the show with the most episodes of a scripted primetime TV show ever aired.

It's a record held by American Western series Gunsmoke for the last 43 years, with the legendary show airing it's 635th and final episode in 1975.

And while The Simpsons nicked an earlier record from the same show nine years ago - overtaking Gunsmoke as the longest running scripted primetime series on TV - this final detail makes its silver screen monopoly pretty much complete.

"We never dreamed we'd get this far," executive producer Al Jean said. "After we aired 635 this past Sunday, I was pretty confident.

"I thought if we made it it would be a marvellous tribute to the writers, animators and cast who work so hard; and particularly to the wonderful fans who've stuck with us all these years.

"The record-breaker on Sunday is a small touching story reminiscent of the early seasons, with a couple of Easter eggs for fans."
