In what can only be seen as a blatant attempt to cut Bob Hawke's grass, Tony Abbott was caught skolling a Toohey's New at the rugby over the weekend.

Footage of the former PM, who was double-parked at the time, was sent to Brown Cardigan's Instagram account after the Manly Marlins and Warringah rats rugby derby on Saturday.

And no, it's not a UDL he's drinking; it's one of Toohey's New's limited edition "Old Buck Advice" range, released just in time for State of Origin.

The Daily Telegraph reached out to Mr Abbott, who confirmed that: "It was an enjoyable day on the Manly Hill, celebrating a good result."

It's an interesting patch of turf to play in; fellow former PM Bob Hawke has made an art out of smashing a frothie at sports games, most recently at the SCG during the Ashes.
