An American woman is refusing to claim her Powerball winnings because she doesn't want her identity to become public knowledge.

Due to lottery rules in America, it must become public knowledge who the winner is of any lottery game.

Meaning; family, friends, neighbours, old friends you've not seen in years and even criminals will all know exactly who you are and what's going in your bank account.

The woman, did however, attempt to claim the winnings and remain anonymous taking it all the way to the courts.

Although, this was completely shut down by New Hampshire Lottery who affirmed the winner must abide by the laws like all previous winners.

"The New Hampshire Lottery understands that winning a $560 million Powerball jackpot is a life-changing occurrence," a statement read.

"Having awarded numerous Powerball jackpots over the years, we also understand that the procedures in place for prize claimants are critically important for the security and integrity of the lottery, our players and our games.

"While we respect this player’s desire to remain anonymous, state statutes and lottery rules clearly dictate protocols."

It seems as though the half-a-billion dollars will remain in limbo.
