Is a zebra black with white stripes? Or white with black stripes? Or is it actually a donkey painted to look like a zebra?

Such was the question faced by a bloke in Egypt earlier this month who, on taking a trip to Cairo zoo, came face-to-long-face with an animal purporting to be a zebra.

Except there were a couple of strange feature differences; there was no thick, dark mane like most zebras traditionally sport.

The animal's ears were longer than expected.

Oh, and the black paint around its face had been smudged in the heat.

Sarhan's snaps of the donkey-zebra (don-bra? zeb-key?) quickly went viral, prompting vets and animal experts around the world to chip in with their educated opinions that no, that's definitely not a zebra.

The zoo's director, Mohamed Sultan, is still insisting that what we're looking at here is absolutely, unequivocally, definitely not a donkey.

OK, mate.
