London doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, if you’re smart, there are loads of things you can do without spending any money at all.

In fact, below are great value attractions that are completely FREE. That way you’ve got more in your wallet for the bits of London that cost a fortune, like watching a Premier League game, seeing a big stadium gig or just eating at a mid-range restaurant.

With that in mind, here’s our Top Ten of FREE London.

Olympic Park

The Poms are still whinging about how much this cost, but with a playground, sculptures and cool grounds, it’s a pretty cool place to hang out for a couple of hours. And if you do want to watch a Premier League game, West Ham United will have plenty of tickets now they’ve moved into the 60,000 capacity stadium. They might not be free, but the park is.

Somerset House

Right on The Strand, Somerset House is a popular tourist hangout, with open courtyard and regular exhibitions through summer, then turned into an ice rink in winter. As it’s free, central and hard-to-miss, it’s a great spot to arrange meeting up with mates on the other side of the world.

British Library

Travel 12,000 miles to go to the library? Seriously? Well, yes actually. The British Library is ridiculously huge and as it houses many of the world’s most famous and important documents, it’s a surprisingly good, free attraction. Check out the original lyrics as penned by The Beatles.

Buckingham Palace

Say hi to Liz and watch the Changing of the Guard, then grab a pic with one of the Queen’s Guards (the blokes with the furry hats). All free.

Coram’s Field

Great one for kids. Spend a day in the huge urban space in Camden. There’s cafes, gardens, playgrounds, pets corner, sandpits, duck pond and various entertaining attractions all aimed at kids. In fact, adults are only permitted if they are accompanied by kids under the age of 16.

Imperial War Museum

Experience what it was like in a First World War trench, get up close with weapons used in battles throughout history and see the latest special exhibitions updated throughout the year. One of London’s best museums on the south side of the Thames.

Tate Modern

The world’s most famous art gallery is right on the Southbank and has to be seen, if only to work out whether the animals in formaldehyde or pitch black rooms with nothing in are “art” or just the product of over-stimulated minds.

Watch Live At The Apollo

Good luck getting tickets as they go bloody fast. But they are also absolutely free. Guaranteed to see the best comedians in a show broadcast around the world, click here to register.

Science Museum

This gets packed so go early in the morning unless you want to fight the crowds. But even when it’s busy, it’s still one of the best museums you’ll find. Loads of interactive attractions and special exhibitions right through the year, the Science Museum never fails to inspire.

Hyde Park

There’s plenty of great parks in London (Regent’s, St James’s, Greenwich, Holland and Battersea among them) but Hyde Park, next to Buckingham Palace, still reigns supreme. The largest of four parks running from Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park via Hyde Park Corner and Green Park, and split in half by The Serpentine, the park has plenty of places to get lost – in the best possible way. Speaker’s Corner, the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial, and the “upside-down tree” are just three things to check out.
