With the Easter long weekend ahead, it's time to dig your rod - easy - and get your fishing line wet.

But where to? Do you head inland or stick to the coast? Lake or river? Or is this the year you finally tackle fly-fishing?

To help you decide, we've rounded up, in no particular order, our favourite fishing spots in NSW.

1. Pilcher's Reserve, Dubbo

Fishing on the Macquarie River is so legendary that it's referred to as "Cod's Country". And while there are plenty of decent spots along the 500 km trail to pick from, Pilcher's Reserve is a firm favourite. Not far from Dubbo, it's the perfect spot to head if you fancy fishing somewhere a little bit different this summer.

2. Yamba, Northern NSW

Yamba is one of fishing's best kept secrets so we're trusting you to keep this one under your belt. It's a seven-hour drive north of Sydney or just 90 minutes from Coffs Harbour Airport and is dream for novices and super serious anglers alike. Cast off from the rocks, from the beach or from the estuary or treat yourself to a boat hire or charter.

3. Lake Eucumbene, Snowy Mountains

Dubbed the "jewel in the crown" of the Snowy Mountains' many cracking lakes, Lake Eucumbene is beloved by NSW fishermen. Whether that's because of its sheer size - when full, it holds nine times the volume of Sydney Harbour - or because there's a pretty good chance you might finally land your "trophy trout" is unclear but you're going to love it regardless.

4. Forster-Tuncurry, Mid-North Coast

For an option a little closer to Sydney, head to Forster-Tuncurry; the twin towns, situated on the mid-north coast region of NSW, boast stretches of pristine beaches, plenty of rock ledges and a lake packed with flathead and bream. Wallis Lake is also one of the state's biggest suppliers of Sydney rock oysters, if you're into that sort of thing.

5. Burril Lake, Ulladulla

Speaking of flathead, Burril Lake is, hands down, the best spot to fish in Ulladulla. There are plenty of ramps if you're taking the boat out but, if not, fishing from the shore and the bridge is just as fun. Since the lake is almost permanently open to the sea, you might even snag yourself some salmon and tailor if you head down to the beach and rocks by the lake's entrance. Plus it's less than four hours south of Sydney. Too easy.

Don’t go overboard fishing. Catch a fish not a trip to emergency. Don’t let your mates drink and drown.’

Research by Royal Life Saving Society has revealed that 1,995 men have lost their lives drowning in the past decade. Two in five men had drugs and/or alcohol in their system.
