Townsville residents have more chances to get fit for free with new fitness equipment being installed on The Strand.

The initiative aims to promote health and well-being ahead of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

The project has been co-funded between Townsville City Council and the Queensland Government as part of the Public Domain Improvement Program (PDIP) and is a legacy of Townsville’s involvement in the Games as an event city.

Division 3 Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the project would be a welcome addition to The Strand.

“The Strand is already a wonderful place to get active, and many residents take full advantage of it every day of the week,” Cr Greaney said.

“Having more fitness equipment available gives people even more choice for how they want to get active and stay fit for free.”

The equipment has been designed to be suitable for a variety of age groups and abilities.

Councillor Maurie Soars said the equipment is a great way to encourage locals to get active and get healthy.

“We know obesity is an issue in North Queensland and having this equipment on The Strand gives residents more opportunities to improve their fitness for free,” Cr Soars said.

“The location of the equipment means residents can do a variety of activities in the one spot – from muscle training to running and swimming.

“This is a great investment in local facilities to encourage residents to get out and get active with no cost to them.”

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said the Palaszczuk Government had invested $25,000 from the PDIP program to upgrade and install new fitness equipment on The Strand.

“Townsville has a great outdoor lifestyle and this fitness equipment will encourage locals and visitors alike to get active,” Mr Stewart said.

“Queensland is just 20 days away from the biggest event in our state’s history and the Games will leave a lasting legacy for Townsville.
