Townsville City Council is hosting a free World Wetlands Day community event at Rowes Bay on Saturday that will be packed with interactive displays, workshops, kids’ activities and tours.

The event will also include an appearance from Ranger Dan, pizza making and door prizes.

Community Health and Environment Chair Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the event is a great way for the community to get involved and learn about the environment and sustainability in Townsville.

“We’re lucky to live somewhere with a beautiful natural environment for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

“It’s important that we educate the community on how to preserve this environment and encourage sustainable practices.

“There are significant benefits to protecting our wetlands, particularly in an urban area like Townsville.”

Urban wetlands can help control flooding, filter waste from water, improve air quality, provide a source of drinking water, and create jobs for the community.

The event will begin at the Rowes Bay Sustainability House on Cape Pallarenda Road at 4pm and will conclude at 6pm.
