Opera Queensland are on the hunt for Townsville locals to star in a bold and quirky operetta, and you’re about to meet two hopefuls.
This week Opera Queensland hosted their Project G&S auditions for its star-studded production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Ruddigore, or the Witch’s Curse! , paving the way for 10 men and 10 women to sing and dance in the community chorus.
Successful Townsville singers will take part in a free, intensive development program over eight weeks of
rehearsals, honing their singing, dancing and stagecraft skills with a local chorus master and Assistant
Director Sean Andrews.
Steven Newitt- a Maintenance Tech at the Townsville Civic Theatre- brings home the bacon after spending his work day in the theatre environment, but this was his chance to show off his vocals at work.
The moment the auditions were advertised, the Opera enthusiasts was quick to apply.
“Opera is just another type of singing really, if you can sing Pop, you can probably sing Opera,” said the newlywed.
Steven keeps his love of Opera alive by singing with the Townsville Choral Society chorus.
“It’s like anything, if you don’t exercise it, you lose it,” he says.
Pimlico High student Jacalyn Adcock shares this enthusiasm and says she wouldn’t say no to a career in the field.
“I love to shower sing, I’ve been doing it all my life. My sisters bedroom is right next to the shower, she’s got a lot to say about that,” joked Jacalyn.
The Year 12 student has grown up taking signing lessons and says the nerves were high leading into the auditions, but the panel of experts helped eased the tensions.
The auditions have wrapped up now, and we wish Steven & Jacalyn all the best in their operatic adventures!
Project G&S chorus members will take centre stage at Townsville Civic Theatre on Wednesday 15 August 2018.
