A new waterpark at Riverway is a step closer after Townsville City Council awarded the contract to deliver a concept plan for the project to Townsville-based Premise.

The new waterpark is expected to be a huge hit with local families and visitors by enhancing one of Townsville’s most popular public spaces.

The concept plan for the waterpark will examine ways to make the Riverway Lagoon more family friendly by upgrading facilities in the area.

Ideas could include installing water slides, creating better linkages to the Ross River waterway and child friendly water play spaces. It will also look at the potential to locate a commercial operator into the precinct for an even greater family experience.

The Riverway waterpark project is part of Council’s Townsville 2020 masterplan – which provides a clear vision for our city.

Mayor Jenny Hill said Townsville 2020 aims to ensure world-class facilities and experiences are available throughout the city and suburbs for locals and visitors.

“So many people use Riverway every day, we thought the area needed an upgrade,” Cr Hill said.

“This concept plan will explore all options about what sort of waterpark could be built at Riverway and find out exactly what locals want for the area.

“I’m sure that even more people will flock to Riverway after the new waterpark is built there.”

Cr Hill said Townsville 2020 would provide a road map to ensure major projects, such as the Riverway waterpark, were completed or well on the way to completion by 2020.

“Townsville 2020 is about providing a clear vision of what we want our city to be – to realise its potential without changing what makes it great,” Cr Hill said.

“It also provides a clear roadmap to show residents, businesses and governments how we will deliver these projects for our community.”

Division 6 Councillor Verena Coombe said the concept plan would help make Riverway even more appealing for local residents.

“The concept plan for a new waterpark at Riverway will cater for young children and the young at heart,” Cr Coombe said.

“Riverway is already popular and residents will be very excited about the prospect of having a waterpark they will be able to use in their local area.”

The concept plan is expected to be completed by September.
