The Northam Aero Club was founded in 1968. Its first landing ground was on Des and Max Smith's farm at Noggojerring on the Southern Brook Road. Twelve months later the then Department of Civil Aviation approved a circuit and flying training area at the present site, and Club members commenced the task of building an airfield which has become one of the town's premier public facilities.
The Club now has about 120 members, ten of whom hold Life Membership. The Club owns a Cessna 172 aircraft, which is used for flight training and for private hire to members. Northam Airport provides an ideal learning environment, with its low traffic densities and freedom from controlled airspace, and training program, conducted under the auspices of the Royal Aero Club of Western Australia, is tailored to suit the individual.
Club competitions are usually held on the second Sunday of every month, and both licensed pilots and students are welcome to participate. Events include spot landings, visits to local farm strips and exercises designed to test pilots' know-how. The Club also organises regular flying visits to other locations, mixing the improvement of flying and navigation skills with the pleasure of social interaction with others in the aviation fraternity. The Club's monthly magazine, Fly About, is posted to members free of charge and is also available on this website.
