The Campaspe Animal Shelter has been inundated with felines and as a result, has extended the adoption promotion until numbers are significantly reduced.

Public Environments Manager, Kate Lemon said the Cat-pacity promotion provides an opportunity to move felines on to loving homes in order to make way for the constant flow of cats and kittens entering the shelter.

“Sadly, the shelter is inundated with cats and kittens. Whilst 36 felines have been adopted since the start of the promotion in early April, another 40 will be available for adoption over the coming weeks. And the cycle continues,” Ms Lemon said.

It is an unfortunate reality that as one cage empties, it is immediately filled with another feline. The Cat-pacity promotion sees feline adoptions heavily reduced to $50. Council registration still applies.

All cats and kittens at the shelter are desexed, microchipped and vaccinated, and have been assessed as having good temperaments that make them suitable for re-homing. The shelter has a variety males and females cat breeds available to adopt.

Surveys show that approximately 90% of owned cats are desexed however it’s the unwanted cats and kittens that are abandoned and surrendered that are continually breeding.

“Cats can become pregnant by four months of age, so early age desexing between 2-3 months is recommended to help manage the volume of abandoned and surrendered felines to the shelter,” Ms Lemon said.

Council is also holding a one day event at the Campaspe Animal Shelter on Saturday, 5 May from 10am – 2pm. Named “The Price Is Right”, all felines will be further reduced at this event with a pick a box set up indicating the adoption price from anything between $0 - $30.

“Cats and kittens make wonderful family pets and ideal companions for people living alone and we encourage all those who understand the long term commitment of caring for a pet to visit the shelter and take advantage of the price reduction while it lasts,” Ms Lemon said.

If adoption is not an option, the Campaspe Animal Shelter is seeking assistance from the community to help advocate the many feline friends desperate for a loving home by sharing Facebook posts and spreading the word.

The Campaspe Animal Shelter is open seven days a week at varying times, including throughout the school holiday period. For more information call the Campaspe Animal Shelter on 5480 3005, or visit their website at www.campaspeanimalshelter.com.au
