Young people in the Rockhampton Region are being invite to make their voices heard when Opera Express comes to town next month!

Opera Express is a creative arts programme in which students create and perform their own original opera over a 4-day period, encouraging each child to discover their potential.

Collaboratively, the group of students will devise the characters, plot, script, music, sets, choreography and performance of the opera.

Communities Chair Councillor Rose Swadling stated that the programme is a great opportunity for youth in the Rockhampton Region, particularly leading up to Mental Health Week.

Queensland Mental Health Week aims to increase awareness and interest in positive mental health and wellbeing, and a key theme of this year’s campaign is to keep learning – to embrace new experiences, recognise opportunities, and surprise yourself... What better way to do this than to immerse yourself into these creative workshops, especially as Opera Express is open to anyone with any level of experience, not just those already involved in music and arts.

- Rose Swadling

The project is free and open to anyone between the ages of 12-25 who lives in the Rockhampton Region.

Participants must commit to attending every workshop at the Southside Library throughout the duration of the program...

  • 9.00am – 3.00pm Tuesday 2 October until Friday 5 October
  • Performance on Friday 5 October at 6.00pm
  • Performance on Saturday 6 October at 10.00am

The Rockhampton Opera Express project also received a $10,000 community prize from QSuper. Chief Executive Officer Michael Pennisi stated that the company is delighted to support a community event that inspires young people and contributes to mental health and wellbeing.
