Community Memorial Service - Reverend Doug Murray

He was a man that touched the lives of countless Esperance people, and his life will be remembered today at Revd. Doug Murray’s memorial service, 11am at the Esperance Civic Centre.

Revd. Doug Murray was an outstanding man. He was ambitious and persistent, traits that led him to being heavily involved in school and community programs. He established or was heavily involved in the rotary exchange program, alternative pathways for graduate high school students, the construction of the Esperance Civic Centre and the instalment of the Esperance Anglican Community School and these are just a few of his more notable achievements. He was also concerned with a numerous amount of clubs and groups around town.

Revd. Murray was born in York before his family moved to Waroona in the south-west. He received a scholarship to Bunbury Senior High and continued his education and gravitated towards teaching. Eventually he would come to Esperance on holiday and fall in love with the town, settling down with the Principal’s role at the Esperance for 23 years. Revd. Doug Murray drive is the main road running through the school. He joined the Esperance Rotary Club in 1969.

His wonderful work was recognised when he was awarded the Order of Australia in 2010.

Murray’s life today at the memorial service, including Ruth McIntyre who worked closely with the man during his tenure as Principal at the Esperance Senior High School.
