It's the night of nights for the Esperance District Football League! The Helpburn medal is happening this Sunday, 4pm at the Esperance Bay Turf Club.

The chat before will be about the potential winners across all grades. Last year's Richie Bourne started the season late and would be competing against his Bulldog's teammate, Brendon White, for the medal. Whitey will undoubtedly go in as favourite, kicking big bags of seven plus games, most notably Gibson in two of the round games. Dangerous when the ball hits the ground and supremely accurate around the big posts White will be the one to beat.

BJ Whiting has shone on the half-back line this year for Gibson with his strong aerial ability and the silkiest left foot in the league. He would would be the Tiger's best chance for the medal, only just in front of hard nosed skipper Patch Jannings he has been dependable again this year and can poll a vote or two (he finished runners up last year).

Then their are the Zach's from Ports and Newtown of the Liddlelow and Wickstein. They have had solid years for their clubs as well as Nigel Johnston for Ports, the stalwart in defense, and Elijah Edwards, the talented attacker, but will the teams have enough wins get the votes?

The talk during the count will be the curse of the Hepburn Medal. Twice this year the favourites have been knocked from their perch. Cam Wohling was excellent at the beginning of the year with (possibly) three best on grounds to kick of the season. An ankle injury meant he was unable to continue his good form and would have to go under the knife. He has not been seen again. Similarly, Roger Parsons was the favourite from the Esperance Footy Club, imposing himself on several games. He was crippled by a knee injury against Gibson mid-season, and is in a race against time to make it back for finals. They will most likely take poll position at some stage during the night, and are doubtful winners.

The smokey, for mine, is Jordan McAllister. A previous winner, juggernaut around the ground and genuine nice smile will attract the umpires attention. He has not played every game this year, far from it, but may have played enough and gathered enough votes to see him clasp the Hepburn again.

Stay tuned for the results Monday morning, and a few sore heads.
