Women’s footy at the top level is going through a tumultuous period. The AFL is grappling with the shape and size of the league and fixtures as they continue to analyse and predict television viewership and match day attendances. At the grassroots level however, AFL across the women’s spectrum is flourishing. A training camp saw almost fifty young women attend Newtown Oval to receive advice and be trained by former Kangaroos and Eagles great Drew Petrie. The Esperance Women’s side beat Kalgoorlie earlier this year and there is another opportunity for women interested in playing to get involved with the next big footy event.

An inaugural Australian Rules Women’s Carnival will be taking place on the weekend of the 13 October. Two huge days of footy with teams from Esperance, Kalgoorlie, Kambalda and Albany at Newtown Oval will parade the talented skills of footballers from around the region.

Kalgoorlie and Kambalda have a fierce rivalry and the Albany women’s league is of a high standard. The weekend competition is going to be exciting and ferocious.

It’s good timing too, the mid-October dates mean that we can get back into the footy after an exhaustive AFL finals series.

If you’d like to be involved in the Esperance Women’s Team please contact the Esperance Women’s Footy Facebook page. Sean spoke to Gemma Harrison the Goldfields Regional Manager of the West Australian Football Commission, on the Breakfast show on Monday!
