A year to this day tragedy struck Esperance when then 17-year-old Laeticia Brouwer was attacked by a great white shark at Kelp Beds Beach. She was surfing with her father approximately 200 m off shore when incident occurred. Her father brought her to shore and local beachgoers attempted to resuscitate Laeticia. Despite their efforts she passed away on the beach.

Later today the Ocean Safety and Support Esperance group would like to welcome you to the Whale Tale on the Esperance foreshore to remember Laeticia. There will be a minute silence at 2pm followed by a flower tributes.

Raising awareness about such tragedies is crucial to reinvigorate plans for further research and efforts to counter future shark attacks. Despite being a divisive issue all parties can agree that preservation of human life should be of paramount concern, and more needs to be done to make our beautiful Esperance breaks safer.
