When the Queen of Soul passed away just over two months ago she left the kind of legacy that only a glass ceiling-smashing icon can. The first woman ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Aretha Franklin won 18 Grammy awards, earned a Lifetime Achievement Award and is widely considered to be the best singer the world has ever seen.

It was Aretha’s hits that initially put ex-Inala forklift operator Emily Williams on the map back in 2005 as she belted them out on stage in front of a gobsmacked nation as part of the Australian Idol series that saw her crowned runner-up. Emily’s success continued as she joined the Young Divas (This Time I Know It’s For Real), performing alongside Paulini, Jessica Mauboy and the GC’s very own Ricki-Lee Coulter, but it was as a solo artist where she was given the freedom to really show off her vocal chops and wow a crowd.

“To me music isn’t just words accompanied by a beat, it’s everything, it’s the soundtrack to my world.”

- Emily Williams
