Let's go off the beaten track

There are ways to beat the crowds across the Coast, if you've got the inside goss.

Luckily we do, and we're willing to share with you some of the best hidden gems around town.

Hinze Dam, Advancetown

It's a small town tucked away in the Gold Coast Hinterland, but there are hidden gems waiting to be explored around every nook and cranny - including Hinze Dam.

To many, this may just be our local watering hole, but it's so, so much more.

The drive up to Hinze Dam is just as picturesque as its picnic areas. The perfect family day out, just 20 minutes from the M1, with a bike track, shady eating spots and plenty of green space.

Main Western Road, Mt Tamborine

It's not technically a picnic spot, but according to locals, it's the most spectacular place to admire sweeping views  of the Hinterland and watch the sun go down.

You won't be able to miss it along the long Main Western Road. It's a clear patch many pull over to admire the vantage point with benches and binoculars.

Pack a picnic, or collect some fresh produce from a nearby restaurant or the local market that's held every second Sunday of the month.

Salk Oval - Currumbin

Most people (including many locals) venture to the south side of the river, making it a difficult spot to find a patch of sand or park most weekends.

Between the Thrower Drive and Pacific Motorway bridge, there's a secluded spot called Salk Oval. Never crowded and with a free car park, bring down your SUP and swimmers, because chances are this spot won't stay sacred for long.

Central Park, Pacific Pines

With plenty of green open space to throw down a picnic rug or camp chairs, sit back and relax while the kids are entertained with the flying fox, spider web and swings or busy spotting ducks, fish and eels by the lake.

Take the bikes to and ride around the lake or play a game of footy in the field.

This little hideaway park is a gem for birthday parties or weekends outside.
