Just when you thought the Gold Coast couldn't get enough of walking zombies and bad Halloween face paint, we are now gearing up for Day of the Dead.

The Mexican holiday originated from the belief that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31, and the spirits of all the deceased children are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours.

On November 2, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them.

The official Day of the Dead is then celebrated on Friday 3 November where family and friends gather to remember those who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.

The spooky tradition is also a chance to dress up in your finest death-like attire.
