Work is underway on a major refurbishment of the Civic Theatre in Wagga, with Council shelling out $700,000 for new seats, new paint and carpet, and a retractable roof on the balcony.

Theatre Manager Carissa Campbell says since 1999 when the balcony was added, the auditorium made accessible and the technical facilities upgraded, the theatre has developed into a major performing arts centre with over 140 performances and over 50,000 audience members each year.

The extensive work means the Civic Theatre is closed until late March, but people can still purchase tickets for shows in the lower foyer, or online.
