RAAF Round v Sydney

The Jets are flying toward RAAF round

Last year they scored two goals in their final nine games, claimed the wooden spoon, and had their third coach in 24 months shown the door.

Fast forward to 2018, and the Jets are flying, ahead of RAAF Round!

They can’t stop scoring, with at least one goal in each of their 21 games so far, and 13 different players finding the back of the net.

This Saturday, Newcastle hosts ladder leaders Sydney FC in a top of the table blockbuster. Here’s our look ahead at the big game.

THE HOME FACTOR

With seven of their twelve wins at Broadmeadow, the Jets have made good on their promise to make their home ground a fortress! In an imposing stat for Sydney FC, only one team has scored at McDonald Jones Stadium in 2018, with the Jets keeping clean sheets in four of their last five home fixtures.

THE EX-PLAYERS

Former Jets players Josh Brilliante and David Carney know what it’s like to play for Newcastle, but neither achieved success in their time here. The pair return on Saturday night against a vastly different Jets outfit, full of confidence and with far more experience in their ranks.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Socceroos coach in waiting Graham Arnold has made no secret of his desire for Sydney to make the final 16 of the Asian Champions League. But with just one point from their opening two fixtures, their upcoming match with Kashima Antlers comes just a few days after their clash with Newcastle. With an 11 point lead on the A-League ladder, will Arnie field a weaker side in order to prioritise his club’s Asian ambitions?

SOCCEROOS DREAMS

Bert van Marwijk has reportedly requested the medical and training info of Jets attackers Andrew Nabbout and Dimi Petratos. A stand out performance by the pair against the ladder leaders would surely make the new Australian coach sit up and take notice, as he prepares to select his squad for the upcoming March friendlies.

Kick off is 5:35pm on Saturday night, and Jets CEO Lawrie McKinna is calling for over 15 thousand of us to get through the gates and spur the team on for a big win!
