Taking the plunge through the layers of storytelling from dance, drama, comedy and physical theatre, the 2018 Civic Theatre Season offers a diverse range of shows that will further the ‘Civics’ reputation as the premier regional theatre destination.
The opening on Wednesday night was a celebration of the unique place the Civic Theatre holds in the identity of Newcastle and the Hunter. As Dr Ray Kelly explored in his Welcome to Country, the Civic is a meeting place for the sharing of the stories that connect us.
Just some of the national and internationally recognised performers and companies visiting Newcastle in 2018 are Bangarra Dance Theatre, Opera Australia, Sydney Dance Company and Sydney Theatre Company. During the launch, the teaser to Our land people stories from Bangarra Dance Theatre was simply breathtaking. The team from Bangarra will be in Newcastle this February. Further Season highlights include Madame Butterfly - ab [intra] - and Wharf Revue 2018.
They will be joined by The Fortuna Spiegeltent, in Civic Park, plus the stunning Prize Fighter to be performed at TUFF’N Gym, and the emotional Letters to Lindy recalling the incredible iconic story of Lindy Chamberlain Creighton . For the whole family, Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton’s The 78-Storey Treehouse comes to life on the stage, and the adaptation of Jackie French and Bruce Whatley classic picture book, Josephine Wants to Dance will be one to book early.
