Blood moon in Bunbury

Article heading image for Total Lunar Eclipse

The Astronomical Society of the South West (Inc) will be hosting an evening event for the public on Wednesday 31st January 2017 to watch the Lunar Eclipse from 7.30pm to 10:00pm at the Bunbury Recreation Ground, Symmons St, Bunbury. Weather permitting.

This is a very rare astronomical event as it will be a "Super Blue Blood Moon" that hasn't occurred since 1866.

A 'Super moon' is when the moon is at the closest point in its orbit to earth.

A 'Blue moon' is the second full moon of the month.

A 'Blood moon' because the moon during a Lunar Eclipse appears red due to the Sun's light scattering through the Earth's atmosphere.

Please bring any chairs, picnic rugs etc you may wish to sit on to watch the Eclipse. Parking available on-site near Runners Club building and at public carpark opposite side of Ocean Rd.

We will have telescopes on the moon itself as well as various other night sky objects during the eclipse when the sky becomes darker.

Entry Fee: $5 Adults $2 Children
