Cameron Smith has reportedly returned to training despite no official announcement of his re-signing with the Melbourne Storm.

Smith, who set tongues wagging after hinting that the 2018 season may have been his last, took an extended holiday with his family after the Storm's Grand Final loss to the Roosters, missing the first half of pre-season training.

But the 35-year-old was said to be present and accounted for last Thursday when training resumed.

It follows months of speculation that the star was in a contract stand-off with Melbourne bosses, despite officials repeatedly reassuring fans that Smith would definitely be back for the 2019 season.

The return puts the goalkicking hooker on track to become the first-ever player to play 400 games - barring serious injury - and to break the record for the most points scored in an NRL career.

Smith currently sits just 32 points behind former Canterbury legend Hazem El Masri, who himself took the record from Andrew Johns in 2009.
